Waikouaiti road, East Otago Live Cam

The main road through Waikouaiti in East Otago, a small coastal town about forty kilometres north of Dunedin. State Highway 1 runs straight through it.

The camera looks across the highway at the roadside: a shelter, a community noticeboard, a dry-stone wall and a few parked cars. Waikouaiti is one of the oldest European settlements in the region, founded as a whaling station in the 1830s.

Most of the traffic in the frame is passing rather than stopping. The beach and the Hawksbury Lagoon, a wildlife refuge with a good bird list, are a few minutes away on either side of the road.
