Weather and time
Dunedin stands at the head of Otago Harbour on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, in the Otago region. The webcam looks across the water at the city from the far shore.
The place was founded in 1848 by Free Church settlers from Scotland, and the name is the Gaelic for Edinburgh. A gold rush in the 1860s made it briefly the largest city in the country, which is where the stone banks and warehouses came from.
The harbour is a drowned volcanic crater, sixteen kilometres of sheltered water with a single narrow entrance. Royal albatrosses breed on the headland at the mouth of it, the only mainland colony of the species anywhere.
