Weather and time
Matsuse Bridge crosses the Hidaka River in the Haikuzu area of Hidakagawa, and this camera looks over a wide gravel bar. A red-and-white water level gauge stands on a round concrete pier beside the steel girder deck.
Hidakagawa is a town in Wakayama Prefecture, formed in 2005 from the former Kawabe, Nakatsu and Miyama municipalities, and the Hidaka River winds through its forested hills and farmland. The prefecture runs its Kawabe river-level station at this bridge. Here the river is wide and shallow, with pale green water running over gravel.
The camera sits low on the left bank, so the gravel bar fills the foreground while a concrete embankment wall, a grassy strip and farm fields line the far side. The gauge on the pier at the right edge makes rises and falls of the water easy to judge. The view stays fixed on this one reach.
