The lake is the second largest reservoir in Bulgaria and lies at about 1,200 metres, which makes it one of the highest large bodies of water in the Balkans. Trout and carp farms work the sheltered arms — the rectangular rafts visible in the middle distance — and the shore is lined with small guest houses.

The camera is fixed under the roof of a wooden veranda, so part of the beam frames the shot. Mist sits on the water at dawn through most of the year, and the surface freezes along the edges in hard winters.
