Weather and time
This camera looks south from Wood Island off Kittery Point, Maine, across the island's rocky ledges to Whaleback Light and the open sea. Seaweed-covered rocks and a shallow tidal pool fill the foreground, with the granite lighthouse on its reef in the middle.
Wood Island lies at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, where Portsmouth Harbor meets the Gulf of Maine. Its life saving station opened in 1908, and its surfmen carried out more than 60 major rescues before it closed in 1948. It was restored and reopened as a museum in 2024. Whaleback Light, just to the south, guards the harbor entrance with a granite tower from 1872.
The camera sits on the station's lookout tower and holds one fixed view toward the lighthouse. At low tide the ledges and the pool lie exposed; as the water rises, the sea covers the rocks and fills the small cove on the left.
