Weather and time
Fixed view from a wooden deck at the Visitor Interpretive Center of Paul Smith's College across a marsh and open pond. Tall pines frame the wetland, and forested hills rise along the horizon.
The centre stands beside State Route 30 in Paul Smiths, in the town of Brighton, Franklin County, about 1.6 km north-north-east of the main campus. It lies inside Adirondack Park, and the state conservation department lists the site as a watchable wildlife area with marsh, bog and pond habitat. Its trail network includes the Heron Marsh Trail.
The camera does not move, so the deck railing, the gravel area on the right and the tall pine trunks always hold the foreground. Beyond them the wide marsh stretches toward a pond of open water, with a wooded ridge on the horizon. Light and weather change the colours of the marsh while the composition stays the same.
