Union Bluff York, Maine Live Cam

Short Sands is a crescent of beach at York Beach in southern Maine, held between rocky points at either end. The webcam looks along it from a hotel above the road.

The lighthouse on the rock off Cape Neddick, a few minutes away, was lit in 1879. It stands on an island a hundred yards offshore, and while it was staffed the keeper's family crossed to the mainland in a basket slung under a cable.

York is one of the oldest English settlements in Maine, chartered in the 1640s on a site occupied long before, and was burned in a raid in the winter of 1692. The beach and the park behind it belong to the town, which is unusual on this coast.
