Main Street Saluda, North Carolina Live Cam

Main Street at Saluda runs beside the railway line in the mountains of western North Carolina, in the United States. The webcam looks down the street and the track that follows it.

The line here is the Saluda Grade, the steepest standard-gauge main line ever worked in the United States: it climbs about 185 metres in under five kilometres. Runaway safety tracks were built into the hillside to catch trains that lost their brakes, and several used them.

Freight stopped running over the grade in 2001 and the rails have sat idle since. The town below is a row of buildings from the turn of the last century, and its best-known event is a dog show and parade held on the first Saturday after Independence Day.
