Weather and time
An osprey nest sits on a wooden pole platform in the dunes of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, just in front of the Spermaceti Cove Life-Saving Station. Behind the bulky pile of sticks, Atlantic waves break in long white lines beyond a strip of sand.
Sandy Hook is a barrier spit about six miles long at the northern tip of the Jersey Shore and part of Gateway National Recreation Area. The station was built in 1894 for the U.S. Life-Saving Service and later served as a park visitor center. Flooded by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the building was fully restored in 2023.
The fixed camera looks east past the nest to the open ocean, with two slanted poles rising above the sticks. In 2025, the camera's first season, a pair of ospreys raised three chicks here. In autumn the birds fly south and the empty nest stays in view against the surf.
