Mount Washington Cog Railway Live Cam

From the terrace at the Base Station, the track of the Mount Washington Cog Railway climbs away into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Carriages and locomotives stand on the sidings below, with picnic tables and a boarding platform alongside.

The line opened in 1868 and was the first mountain-climbing rack railway in the world. It runs about three miles to the summit of Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet the highest point in the northeastern United States, on gradients that reach 37 per cent.

Steam and biodiesel locomotives both work the route, each pushing a single carriage ahead of it. Departures run through the day in season, so the camera catches trains building steam and pulling out of the frame at regular intervals.
