Weather and time
The wooden observation tower beside the CSX tracks in La Grange, Kentucky, looks along the line toward a gated road crossing. A signal mast, a curving road with a double yellow line and a low orange-roofed building fill the frame.
La Grange is the seat of Oldham County, northeast of Louisville, and its rails belong to the CSX LCL Subdivision, the former Louisville & Nashville Short Line. West of the tower the tracks are set into Main Street itself, where trains are held to 10 mph. The tower stands near Cedar Avenue, about 900 feet from the railroad museum.
The view is not fixed. Most of the time the lens looks down the line past the crossing, with a thick stand of trees on the left, while another position looks along Main Street from under the tower roof, with a flag on a post and storefronts beside the road.
