Weather and time
This camera looks out from the visitor center at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area near Linton, Indiana, across a wide sweep of prairie. In the foreground stands a pale barn owl nest box on a braced pole, with golden grasses, shrubs and a strip of shallow water beyond.
Goose Pond covers 9,098 acres in Greene County, including nearly 5,000 acres of shallow wetlands and 1,300 acres of prairie. The former cattle ranch, partly mined for coal, became a state wildlife area in 2005. More than 300 bird species have been recorded, and each spring and fall sandhill cranes and American white pelicans gather here in large numbers.
The camera sits at the visitor center, which opened in 2016 with a panoramic observation deck. Staff re-aim it often to follow sandhill cranes and migrating waterfowl, so the scene changes from one visit to the next.
