Weather and time

This camera sits inside the peregrine falcon nest box on the spire of Wakefield Cathedral, looking down across its gravel floor. Beyond the low front lip of the box, the streets of Wakefield city centre lie far below.

Wakefield Cathedral has a spire about 247 feet (75 m) high, the tallest in Yorkshire. A nest box was fitted on the spire after peregrines were seen around the building, and a pair first bred here in 2015. Peregrines build no nest of twigs and lay their eggs in a shallow scrape in the gravel.

Unlike the camera that watches the box from outside, this one is fixed in a high inside corner, so the whole floor is seen at close range. A side panel fills the right edge of the frame, and the open front looks out over the town. Between breeding seasons the box may stand empty.
