Weather and time
The double track of the Settle-Carlisle line leaves Horton-in-Ribblesdale station and runs north towards Ribblehead in the Yorkshire Dales. A grassy bank topped by a drystone wall rises on the left, with fells on the horizon beyond the trees.
Horton-in-Ribblesdale is a Ribblesdale village just west of Pen-y-ghent, one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Its station opened in 1876, closed in 1970 and reopened in 1986. Here the line is on the Long Drag, the 16-mile climb from Settle to Blea Moor, with the 24-arch Ribblehead Viaduct a few miles ahead.
Unlike the quarry siding camera at the south end of the same station, this one looks north along the main line. A small gate marks a crossing on the left, lineside cabinets stand on the right, and the rails bend gently to the left as they head up the dale.
