Weather and time
This view over Burry Port in Carmarthenshire takes in a broad sandy beach, the harbour breakwater and its white lighthouse. Beyond the water, the low hills of the Gower Peninsula line the horizon across the Loughor Estuary.
Burry Port grew around a harbour built in 1832 to ship coal from the Gwendraeth Valley, and the old docks are now a marina for small leisure craft. The lighthouse on the west breakwater dates from 1842. In June 1928 Amelia Earhart came ashore here after the seaplane Friendship landed on the estuary, becoming the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air.
The camera looks south from above a red-surfaced path and a band of rock armour, with the open sand in the middle of the frame. On the right, a stone embankment runs beside the harbour channel to the lighthouse and its red lantern, and small buoys mark the water beyond.
