Strandpaviljoen De Piraat, Cadzand Live Cam

A beach pavilion at Oostkapelle looks out over the North Sea from the island of Walcheren, in Zeeland in the Netherlands. The camera covers the sand and the water.

Walcheren was deliberately flooded in the autumn of 1944. The dykes were bombed in four places to force out the German garrison holding the approaches to Antwerp, the sea came in over almost the whole island, and it took two years to pump out and repair.

The dune forest behind this beach, the Manteling, is one of the older woods in the province and shelters a set of country estates. A duck decoy in it, once used to trap birds, is now a bird reserve.
