Weather and time
This underwater camera sits on top of a steep reef wall off the south shore of Utila, Honduras, at a depth of about 25 feet (8 m). Broad sea fans and branching gorgonians fill the foreground, with schools of small reef fish above them in bright blue water.
Utila, Roatan and Guanaja are the three main islands of the Bay Islands department, and Utila is the westernmost of them and the closest to the mainland. The camera is about 400 feet (120 m) from the beach, on the lip of a wall that drops some 120 feet (37 m) to the sea floor.
Unlike the channel cameras nearby, this one looks across the crest of the reef, so corals fill the lower half of the frame and open water the upper half. Wrasses, sergeant majors and trumpetfish are among the smaller fish that gather over the fans.
