Weather and time

This camera looks into a white stork nest on the roof of Maria Immaculata, the parish church of Zusmarshausen in Bavarian Swabia. The round nest platform sits on the left, with a white mounting frame behind it and red roof tiles to the right.

Zusmarshausen is a market town about 23 kilometres west of Augsburg. It lies on the Zusam just above its confluence with the Roth, and the meadows of both valleys give storks plenty of food. The town was first recorded in 892 and became a market in 1295. In May 1648 it saw the last major battle of the Thirty Years' War.

The camera sits beside the nest, so storks, eggs and chicks are seen at close range. Storks have nested on this church roof in more than twenty seasons and took to the current platform as soon as it was installed. From late summer until the birds return in spring, the nest usually stands empty.
