Munich Oktoberfest, Germany Live Cam

Theresienwiese is the flat ground in the middle of the picture, the field in Munich where the Oktoberfest is put up every year. The webcam looks across it from the tower of St Paul's church.

The festival dates from October 1810, when a horse race was run here for the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, whose name the field still carries. The race went on for decades; the beer stayed.

Building starts in July: the halls in view are tents, raised in timber and canvas over about ten weeks and taken down again by November. For the rest of the year the field is gravel and grass, used for a spring fair, a winter market and parking.
