Weather and time
This live webcam looks out from Cape Arkona (Kap Arkona) on Rügen Island in Putgarten, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at Germany’s North Cape. From the high chalk cliffs above the Mare Balticum (Baltic Sea), the view takes in three of the Cape Arkona Lighthouses (Leuchtturm Kap Arkona) standing on the clifftop plateau. A fourth lighthouse nearby, the Peilturm or naval observation tower, is not visible in this view but remains part of Cape Arkona’s maritime heritage. The towers form part of the European Route of Lighthouses, a cultural trail linking lighthouses along Europe’s coasts.
In the centre of the image stands the small lighthouse, a photo point where visitors can pose with the captain figure for a souvenir photo by scanning the QR code on the captain’s back and pressing the shutter button. To the right rise two historic towers. The Schinkel Tower (Schinkelturm), with its red-brick square base, is the second-oldest lighthouse on Germany’s Baltic coast and now opens only for weddings. Next to it stands the newer Kap Arkona lighthouse, still in operation, guiding ships and giving wide views across the Wittow Peninsula, Rügen, and the sea as far as Hiddensee.
As the northernmost point of Germany, Cape Arkona is both a geographical landmark and a place of maritime history. Nearby, the Arkona Bunker Museum (Museum Marineführungsbunker und Seezeichenausstellung) displays ship models and historic navigation instruments. The camera also shows current weather conditions, and Cape Arkona is one of Germany’s sunniest spots. Each year you can watch the ‘Cape of the Four Towers’ New Year’s Eve fireworks live on this stream. To find this headland on Insel Rügen, see the interactive map further down the page.
