Weather and time
A wide view north over the open Baltic Sea from Cape Arkona on Rügen, with cliff-edge bushes in the foreground and a long horizon. Most of the frame is sky, so clouds, haze and the occasional distant ship are what change.
The cape is a 43 m steep coast of chalk and boulder clay on the Wittow peninsula, the northern part of the island. Just east of the lighthouses lay the Jaromarsburg, a fortress and temple site of the Slavic Rani dedicated to the god Svantevit, which the Danish king Valdemar I captured in 1168. Over the centuries, parts of the headland with the old fortress have repeatedly broken off into the sea.
Unlike the cameras on the lighthouse square, this one points away from the buildings and shows only sea, sky and the edge of the cliff top. The horizon sits low in the picture, with a band of bushes on the cliff top along the bottom edge.
