The municipality has around 66,000 residents and belongs to the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It grew on the bank of the Caí river, which carried goods down to the Jacuí and the lagoon before the roads did.

Morro de São João rises south of the town and is walked for the view over the valley. Winters this far south are cool and grey, and the drizzle in the live picture is ordinary weather here between May and August.
