Teatro Amazonas, Manaus Live Cam

The Teatro Amazonas stands over the Praça São Sebastião in Manaus, its dome tiled in the colours of the Brazilian flag. Trees and a paved terrace fill the near side of the square.

The opera house was finished in 1896 with money from the rubber boom, and most of it was imported: marble from Italy, ironwork from Scotland, furniture from France. It is the best known building in the state of Amazonas.

The wave pattern in the paving outside is said to mark the meeting of the Rio Negro and the Solimões a few kilometres downstream. The Amazonas Philharmonic plays here, the opera festival runs each spring, and the city around the camera sits more than a thousand kilometres up the river from the Atlantic.
