Weather and time
San Gorgonio Mountain, the highest summit in Southern California, rises across the Santa Ana River valley in this view from Big Bear. Its bare, pale top stands out above dark forested slopes, with a long crest running off to the right.
The mountain reaches 11,503 feet and is the heart of the San Gorgonio Wilderness in San Bernardino National Forest. The camera sits at about 8,450 feet on the ridge south of Big Bear Valley, near the top of Bear Mountain, and faces south. Below it, the upper Santa Ana River flows west through a wooded valley followed by State Route 38.
Grinnell Mountain is the high point on the skyline left of the summit, while Jepson and Charlton peaks follow to the right, with Shields and Anderson peaks further west. A tall pine stands at the right edge, and a slope of low yellow brush drops toward the valley floor.
