Weather and time
This camera looks down into a peregrine falcon nest on the roof of the Statler Building on Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo. A gravel ledge with two wooden perches runs between curved stone walls toward a strip of green turf and a lower flat roof.
The Statler opened in 1923 as a grand hotel designed by George B. Post & Sons and fills a whole block across Niagara Square from City Hall. Peregrines first nested downtown on City Hall in 1996, and a year later the state Department of Environmental Conservation placed a nest box on the Statler. By 2004, twenty-two chicks had fledged from the site.
The view stays on the nest rather than the skyline: stone walls bend around both edges, and the perches lead to the turf and the roof beyond. Peregrines lay their eggs here in early spring, and outside the nesting season the ledge may stand empty.
