King penguins share a chilled enclosure with other species at Kansas City Zoo, in Missouri, in front of the camera. Keepers appear at feeding times.

King penguins breed on a cycle that does not fit a year. It takes fourteen to sixteen months to raise a chick, so a successful pair can only manage two chicks in three years, and the young birds spend a winter standing about in brown down waiting for their parents to come back with food.

The building is held near freezing with artificial daylight timed to the southern hemisphere. The zoo covers eighty hectares inside a city park and keeps a few hundred species.
