Weather and time
The marsh at El Rocío lies in front of this view, on the edge of Doñana National Park in Andalusia in Spain. Flamingos and waders stand in the shallow water across the frame, with reeds and trees along the far bank.
Doñana is the largest wetland in the country and a key stop for birds moving between Africa and Europe, with hundreds of thousands wintering here. The camera is run by an ornithological centre on the marsh edge; the park also holds one of the last populations of Iberian lynx.
Water level drives everything: the marsh fills in winter and can dry out completely by late summer, taking the birds with it. Numbers peak in the migration seasons.
