Weather and time
An osprey nest on a wooden pole stands in the tidal salt marshes near Fenwick Island, Delaware, close to the Atlantic coast. The view is fixed and looks across the nest to winding channels and distant trees.
The nest platform rises from a salt marsh a short distance from Little Assawoman Bay and the Atlantic barrier islands. Grassy flats are cut by shallow tidal creeks, and low woods and scattered houses line the far shore. Ospreys feed on fish and favour shallow coastal water like this, which is why they nest on poles and platforms above it.
The camera does not move, so the framing stays the same all day: the nest sits in the centre against the sky, with grass and water in the foreground. Light and clouds change the look of the marsh, and the tide changes how much water fills the channels.
