Weather and time
This camera looks across the Union Pacific main line in Indio, a city in the Coachella Valley of Southern California. Long beige warehouses with beer brand signs stand behind a chain-link fence beyond the rails, and bare, eroded hills rise above their roofs.
The track is the Union Pacific Yuma Subdivision, part of the Sunset Route that links Los Angeles with Arizona and Texas. About 30 trains a day pass here, most of them freight, along with Amtrak's Sunset Limited, which does not stop in Indio. Indio itself began in 1876 as a Southern Pacific stop halfway between Los Angeles and Yuma.
The fixed view faces north-east from the town side of the tracks, with a gravel lot in the foreground. A utility pole stands beside the track, pallets are stacked along the warehouse fence, and antennas top the highest ridge.
