Great Dane puppies share a whelping pen at a service dog project in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in front of the camera. They are bred here rather than bought in.

The size is the whole point. A dog this tall can be leaned on for balance by someone who cannot walk unaided, which is a job a labrador cannot do, and the ones raised here are given away rather than sold once they are old enough to work.

Danes are gentle for their bulk and short-lived because of it, rarely reaching ten. The project breeds, trains and places them itself, and the cameras on the pens are how most people follow the litters.
