Cats have the run of the lounge at River Kitty Cat Cafe on Main Street in Evansville, Indiana, and every one of them is up for adoption. The camera covers the room from the corner, across the chequerboard floor.

Health rules keep the animals away from food preparation, so the coffee counter is a separate room and drinks are carried through a door into the lounge. The cats come from local rescue groups and the line-up changes as they are rehomed.

Evansville stands on a horseshoe bend of the Ohio River, the largest city in the south-west corner of Indiana. Main Street runs from the riverfront through the downtown blocks where the cafe sits, a stretch that was closed as a pedestrian mall for years before the traffic was let back in.
