Duck Island, Maine Live Cam

Duck Island is a low granite ledge in the Isles of Shoals, ten kilometres off the coast where Maine meets New Hampshire. The webcam looks across at it from the next island.

Seals haul out on the rocks in the picture and gulls nest on them. The camera is run from a marine laboratory on Appledore, which shares the archipelago between two states: the border runs through the middle of the group.

Appledore had a summer hotel in the nineteenth century whose owner, Celia Thaxter, kept a cutting garden and a salon that drew painters and writers out from Boston. The garden has been replanted from her own book about it.
