Porto Moniz, Madeira Live Cam

The north coast of Madeira runs across this view at Porto Moniz, at the western end of the Portuguese island. The Ilhéu Mole rock stands offshore below its lighthouse, and terraced slopes drop straight into the Atlantic behind it.

Porto Moniz is known for its lava pools, natural basins in the volcanic rock at the edge of the village that fill and empty with the tide. The old fort on the seafront now holds an aquarium, and the road east runs along the cliffs towards Ribeira da Janela and São Vicente.

This coast takes the full weight of the northern swell, and in winter the sea breaks over the pools and the promenade. The camera is mounted on a hotel at the water's edge.
