The beach has a mix of sand and pebbles and is split into four sections: Praia Formosa, Praia Nova, Praia dos Namorados, and Praia do Areeiro, all marked on the map below. It has lifeguards year-round, access for people with reduced mobility, parking, restrooms, changing rooms, and several restaurants and bars. Along the oceanside promenade you can head toward the Lido area through the Doca do Cavacas Tunnel or follow the boardwalk toward Câmara de Lobos.

Praia Formosa connects by tunnel to the Docas do Cavacas natural pools, seen in the close-up view, as well as the Lido promenade and the Ponta Gorda and Lido beach complexes in Funchal. A new hotel and a public garden have been added, and Praia Formosa remains Madeira Island's most popular beach.
