Weather and time
Looking west from the historic Union Pacific depot in downtown Cheyenne, Wyoming, this view follows the main line through the city's rail yard. Side tracks with parked freight cars and stacks of wooden crossties fill the left of the frame, while a fenced parking lot runs along the right edge.
Cheyenne grew up around the Union Pacific line in 1867, and its sandstone depot of 1887 faces the Wyoming State Capitol from the far end of Capitol Avenue. Today the National Historic Landmark houses the Cheyenne Depot Museum. West of town, the tracks climb toward Sherman Hill, the highest summit of the first transcontinental railroad.
In this fixed view, yellow passenger cars, orange cabooses and strings of tank cars stand on the side tracks. Beyond the rooftops of west Cheyenne, the faint ridge of the Laramie Mountains rises on the horizon.
