Weather and time

Roaring River rises from the base of a bluff in a state park south of Cassville, in the Ozarks of south-west Missouri. The webcam looks down on the spring pool and the hatchery below it.

The spring puts out something like twenty million gallons a day at a steady thirteen degrees, which is why trout live here in a state otherwise too warm for them. A hatchery at the outflow stocks the water daily through the season, and the whistle that opens the day in March draws a crowd.

The stone walls, walkways and dam in the picture were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The land had been given to Missouri in 1928 by a St Louis patent-medicine maker who bought it at auction the year before.
