Sanctuary of Covadonga, Asturias Live Cam

The shrine in the Holy Cave at Covadonga stands in front of this view, in the Picos de Europa of Asturias, Spain. The statue of the Virgin stands in the rock recess above the altar, with lamps and banks of flowers around it.

The cave is set in a cliff above a waterfall, and the whole sanctuary — cave, basilica below, collegiate church — grew around the battle of 722, taken in Spanish tradition as the start of the Reconquista. The stream also carries mass from the basilica.

Pilgrims come throughout the year and in numbers on 8 September, the feast day. The rock face keeps the cave in shadow, so the picture is lit almost entirely by the lamps.
