Weather and time

This camera in San Emiliano, in the Babia district of León, looks north-east towards the twin limestone summits of the Ubiña massif. In front of the peaks, open hillside pastures with fences, scattered trees and a power line lead the eye up to the bare grey rock.

San Emiliano lies in Babia, a high valley district of the Cantabrian Mountains declared a biosphere reserve in 2004. The district gave its name to the Spanish expression "estar en Babia", meaning to be lost in thought, popularly linked to the kings of León who came here to rest. Peña Ubiña, at 2,417 metres, is the highest summit of the massif, on the boundary between León and Asturias.

The fixed view frames the two Ubiña summits side by side, separated by a lower rocky saddle, with streaks of reddish rock on the right-hand peak. Fenced meadows and young conifers fill the foreground.
