Street One Alkmaar, Netherlands Live Cam

De Laat is one of the main shopping streets in the middle of Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The camera looks over the roofs and the towers of the old town.

Alkmaar was the first town in the country to hold out against a Spanish siege, in 1573, after which the phrase that victory begins at Alkmaar went into the language. The Spanish left when the land around the walls was flooded.

The cheese market on the square a few streets away runs on Friday mornings through the summer. Carriers in coloured straw hats move the rounds on wooden barrows, in a routine that goes back to the guild of the seventeenth century.
