Weather and time
A chain of concrete blocks holds the sea flat off Sekiya Beach, on the Sea of Japan shore of Niigata city. The camera looks down the sand from behind the beach houses.
The blocks are there because this coast erodes. Dams on the rivers and the breakwaters of Niigata port cut the supply of sand, and the offshore barriers and groynes were built to hold what is left, which is also why the water inside them barely moves.
Sado Island lies about thirty-five kilometres out and shows on clear days as a low grey shadow. The beach houses go up for July and August and are taken away afterwards; Route 402 along this shore is signed as the Sunset Line, and the sun drops straight into the sea from here.
