Funai Castle Street, Oita City Live Cam

Funai Castle Front Street runs through the middle of Ōita, the prefectural capital on the east coast of Kyushu. The webcam looks along the promenade park beside it.

The castle at the end of the street was the seat of Ōtomo Sōrin, a warlord who converted to Christianity and made this port the base of the Portuguese trade in Japan. He sent four young men to Rome in 1582; they came back nearly a decade later to a country that had banned the religion.

Little of the castle is left beyond the moat and a corner turret. The city was burned out in the air raids of 1945 and rebuilt, and the promenade with its sculptures dates from that reconstruction.
