Rathaus Marktplatz, Dusseldorf Live Cam

The camera overlooks Marktplatz, the square behind Düsseldorf's old town hall, with the Jan Wellem statue at its centre. The gabled houses of the Altstadt close it on the far side.

The brick gable and clock tower on the left belong to the Rathaus, parts of which date to the sixteenth century. Facing it across the cobbles stand the narrow houses of the old town, their ground floors filled with bars and shops — this is the edge of the quarter Düsseldorf likes to call the longest bar in the world. The bronze rider in the middle is Johann Wilhelm II, the elector who rebuilt the city after the Thirty Years' War.

The square carries the city's calendar: markets, stages and stalls appear here through the year, and the Christmas market takes it over completely from late November.
