The Roman Rite Catholic basilica is built in Romanesque Revival style and is dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the Patroness of Brazil.

The shrine is the second largest Catholic church by interior space after St. Peter's Basilica and receives pilgrims from Brazil and other countries. The site's significance began in 1717, when three fishermen found a statue of the Virgin Mary on the Paraíba River and then had an abundance of fish. The wooden statue is on permanent exhibit at the Basilica.
