Weather and time
Koalas sit in the forks of branches in an enclosure at Lone Pine, on a bend of the Brisbane River in Queensland. The camera looks into the trees from the visitor side.
They sleep eighteen to twenty hours a day because of what they eat. Eucalyptus leaves are tough, low in nutrition and toxic to most animals; digesting them takes a long fermentation and leaves very little energy for anything else.
Lone Pine opened in 1927 and is the oldest and largest koala sanctuary anywhere, with something over a hundred of them. Queensland is one of the few places where visitors may still hold one, under rules limiting how long each animal works.
