Weather and time
Elephants stand in a sand yard at Taronga Zoo, on a slope above Sydney Harbour with the city skyline behind them. The camera looks across the enclosure from the visitor side.
The zoo moved to this hillside in 1916 and the animals were ferried across the harbour to reach it. An elephant called Jessie was walked onto a barge at Moore Park, landed at the wharf below and taken up the hill on foot.
The site is steep enough that visitors are carried to the top by cable car and walk down. Taronga runs breeding and rescue work alongside the exhibits, and its sister zoo out west takes the animals that need more room than a harbour headland can give them.
