Capybara are the largest rodents in the world, native to South America and semi-aquatic — they graze on land but retreat to water when disturbed, which is why the enclosure is built around a pond. The group here is a bachelor set of males.

They are most active in the morning and late afternoon and spend the hot part of the day in the shade or the water. The zoo sits on the harbour shore opposite the city centre.
