Gardiner sits where the Gardner and Yellowstone rivers meet, just outside the park's North Entrance, and rafting outfitters run trips on this stretch of the river. The snow line on the surrounding hills shifts with the weather and the season.

The fixed view comes from the rocky bank: boulders fill the right foreground, the river curves away through small rapids, and the houses of Gardiner stand above the far shore with a long hillside behind them. It shows the current, the water level and fresh snow, and it is a river and town view, unlike the Mammoth Hot Springs camera.
