Weather and time

The Pacific reef tank at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio holds ninety thousand gallons of salt water behind a single wall of glass. Reef sharks and rays pass the webcam at close range, with smaller fish worked into the coral.

More than fifty species share the exhibit, among them sea turtles, tangs and wrasse. The tank reproduces the structure of a Pacific reef rather than a single reef in particular, with a deep channel at the front and shallower coral heads behind.

The aquarium building itself dates from 1939 and was put up by the Works Progress Administration, one of several structures at the zoo built that way. It was gutted and rebuilt inside in 2015, and the picture follows gallery hours rather than running through the night.
