Weather and time
This camera looks along the gravel nest ledge of peregrine falcons high on the clock tower of Old Main at Wayne State University in Detroit. Weathered stone and brick walls of the tower rise on the left, and a green metal parapet runs along the right.
Old Main was built in the 1890s as Detroit's Central High School and stands at the corner of Cass Avenue and Warren Avenue in Midtown. The clock in its tower dates from 1934. A pair of peregrine falcons has lived on the building since 2016, laying eggs in the second half of March and raising chicks that fledge in June.
Seen from one end, the whole ledge is in view, so a falcon landing on the gravel fills the foreground. A green mast with a dome camera stands at the far end, and tree-lined streets and mid-rise blocks of Midtown lie beyond. Outside the nesting season the gravel is often empty.
