This is the bay side rather than the Gulf, so the water sits almost flat and the shore shelves gently. The webcam and the beach both belong to a restaurant that occupies the ground behind the camera.

Santa Rosa Beach runs from the bay in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south, with Point Washington State Forest between them. That strip also holds coastal dune lakes, freshwater bodies that break through to the sea after heavy rain and occur in only a handful of places worldwide.
